Last April, Sungchul Kim, president and head of the Mobile Display Business for Samsung Display, was awarded the 2021 Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize by the Society of Information (SID). Dr.Kim is recognized for contributing to the successful launch of mass-production of high-resolution AMOLED displays with LTPS (Low-Temperature Polysilicon) technology.

The SID, an authoritative industry organization for displays founded in 1962, created this prize in 1987 in honor of the German physicist and Nobel Laureate Karl Ferdinand Braun, who invented the cathode-ray tube (CRT). The Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize with the highest authority is awarded for outstanding technical achievement in the display industry, honoring those who have pioneered the underpinning commercial displays.

In the video, President Kim expressed his gratitude for awarding the Braun Prize, saying, “It is a great honor to me to contribute the development and growth of the display industry.” And “I’ll put more efforts to develop the display industry and nurture juniors,” he added.

He remembers the impressive moments with fellow researchers such as the moment Samsung Display succeed the world’s first OLED mass production 14 years ago to the present that it has achieved remarkable application products such as mobile, wearable, and foldable.

Especially, he reminisced the impressive moments that he had spent with fellow researchers, from the moment Samsung Display succeed in the world’s first OLED mass production 14 years ago to the present when it has developed remarkable application products such as mobile, wearable, and foldable.

President Kim expects that the role of the display will be expanded to metaverse beyond the real world with the advent of the 4th industrial era. He also addressed that the future display will not just be limited in an angular shape but expanded to have the diverse form factor and provide a surreal experience. The technology that he explained can experience through the virtual exhibition of Samsung Display in Display Week 2021.

President Kim once again thanked the award for this award and concluded that despite the constant change in technology paradigm and the fierce competition in the market, he would contribute to developing future displays and making a happier and more prosperous life based upon opportunities and innovations.
