[Interview] Behind the Scenes│Interview with Samsung Foldable OLED Developers
Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 have been sweeping the industry with upbeat reviews, with the most eye-catching innovation being display upgrade. With ten years worth of hard work dedicated to this innovation, this article will cover the ‘behind the scenes’ stories of developers who carefully designed foldable into reality, with the latest third attempt being Galaxy Z Fold3. Q1. What was the key objective for foldable panel development in 2021? <Sung-Un Park, Product Development PM>We wanted to highlight the best parts about foldable devices – which is still a fairly novel and unfamiliar technology to most people – by accentuating tangible innovations. Think of low-power technology, big screens, and enhanced user experience with S-Pen support! Q2. Tangible innovation sounds fascinating. Why do you use that specific term? <Sung-Un Park, Product Development PM>To match public expectations of foldables, we focused on realizing display technologies that consumers could see and feel the difference themselves since display is one of the key elements that affect user satisfaction for smartphones. [Learn Display] 12. HDR | High Dynamic Range
The range of lightness and darkness that typical displays express is much more limited than the total spectrum of colors human eyes can detect. High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging allows a more sophisticated description of the bright and dark areas to represent scenes we see through human vision. HDR is a technology that extended the dynamic range (the level of brightness and darkness) to express a more realistic picture quality on display. From the shooting stage, HDR processing identifies the information of the bright and dark areas and expresses shapes and colors of the bright and dark areas in greater detail. When underpinned by dedicated HDR shooting, transmission standard, and display, HDR images can bring the best HDR picture quality.

[Learn Display] 11. DCI-P3
Ushering in an era of digital videos, the film industry set a color space for digital projectors called “DCI-P3”. DCI-P3 presents more optimized color space for the video-watching platform, which was expanded in line with the launch of diverse mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PC. DCI-P3 is a color space or set of colors, defined by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) in an attempt to standardize the color range of digital video projectors. A color space is usually expressed by its triangle on the CIE 1931 XY Chromaticity Diagram that you can see above. New display platforms such as smartphone and tablet PC were released, and DCI-P3 was introduced to meet the need for new color space standard that encompasses the color range of mobile, IT, or cinema contents DCI-P3 covers 25% more color space than conventional sRGB*, and features much wider coverage in red area. *sRGB is the most commonly used color space HP and Microsoft created in 1996 to use on monitors, printers, and the Window.

Samsung Display’s nine OLED panels for laptops achieved GREENGUARD Gold certification of components for first time in the industry Samsung Display’s OLED panels for laptop has achieved UL’s GREENGUARD Gold Certification for low chemical emissions for their components for the first time in the industry. Global safety science leader UL certified that Samsung Display’s nine laptop OLED panels, ranging from 13.3-inch to 16-inch, met the GREENGUARD Gold Certification standard, UL 2819 GREENGUARD Standard for Electronic Equipment. The panels were featured in Samsung’s latest Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360. GREENGUARD Gold certification is awarded to products including electronic and medical equipment that meet its volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle emission standards. As the pandemic sees the demands for electronic devices including latops soaring, Samsung Display released the low chemical emissions laptop OLED panels which minimized the use of plastic substrate sheets, which can be a main source of VOC emissions. Among the LCD components, the backlight can be a major origin of VOCs for its use of multiple plastic substrate sheets. According to tests conducted by the…
