Galaxy Unpacked 2023 was held in San Francisco, U.S., on February 1 (local time). Launched at the event were the “Galaxy S23” and “Galaxy Book3” series, which were very well received for their advanced technology and design. Let us take you through this event, which was held offline for the first time in three years, where you could almost feel the excitement of the audience.
Galaxy S23 Series — The Evolution of the Premium Smartphone
The first product line unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 was the Galaxy S23 series. The three models included in this series are Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. While the base model, Galaxy S23, is equipped with a 6.1-inch display panel, the S23+ comes with a 6.6-inch display, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra a whopping 6.8-inch display, offering an amazing screen experience.
The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ are equipped with the Dynamic AMOLED 2X, which supports FHD+ resolution (2340x1080) and a variable refresh rate (48Hz-120Hz). Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts QHD+ resolution (3088x1440) and a variable refresh rate that ranges from 1Hz to 120Hz, delivering even clearer image quality and reducing battery consumption thanks to efficient power usage.
All three models offer clear images, even in outdoor settings, thanks to their peak brightness of 1,750 nits. The models also come with a vision booster, which automatically adjusts the display brightness at the pixel level according to the lighting of the surrounding environment. This controls the color and contrast in three different levels, enhancing the visual performance and allowing efficient use of the display.
The “Ultra” Experience Offered by the 200-megapixel Rear Camera Impressing Even Renowned Filmmakers
The product that drew the most attention at this year’s Unpacked event was the premium product in the line, Galaxy 23 Ultra. One of the most outstanding strengths of the S23 Ultra is its camera performance — it is the first Galaxy model with a 200-megapixel rear camera. The 200-megapixel sensor can generate a clear image output that can be printed out in larger sizes without compromising the image quality. The upgraded Adaptive Pixel technology was also applied to the new product, to maximize the performance of the rear camera. Depending on the surrounding environment, the resolution automatically shifts from 200 megapixels to 50 and 12 megapixels. This helps to produce clear and sharp images, in low light and moving conditions, by taking in more light.
One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of films that were shot by the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Film director Ridley Scott, of Gladiator and The Martian, shot his short film BEHOLD with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. “I like being able to go into real environments where a lot of rooms and a lot of spaces are very small, so it's very useful,” said the director, expressing his satisfaction with the performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which can easily be used for shooting a film.
Film Director Na Hong-jin, famed for his films The Wailing and The Chaser, also used the Galaxy S23 Ultra to film FAITH. “It is incredible how the details are captured even in low lighting,” said Na, impressed by the reproduction of colors by the S23 Ultra even in darkness. In fact, all the videos featured in Galaxy Unpacked 2023 were shot by the Galaxy S23 Ultra, allowing the audience to witness the amazing camera performance that is comparable to pro-grade ones.
Ramping up the audience’s excitement was footage of the globally famed professional gamer - Faker - in an airport playing a car racing game in high resolution on his smartphone. Faker could play a high-performance game thanks to the technology that optimizes the Galaxy S23 series for such games. As the S23 series is equipped with “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2,” the latest application processor by Qualcomm, the CPU performance of the S23 series was boosted by 34% compared to the previous model. Its NPU and GPU were also improved by 49% and 41% respectively, compared to their predecessors. Heat dissipation was also upgraded, enabling users to stay immersed in the game longer without the device heating up.
Galaxy Book3 — Best Performance to Date Thanks To Its Upgraded Display
The Galaxy Book3 series consists of the Galaxy Book3 360, Galaxy Book3 Pro, and Galaxy Book3 Ultra. The series instantly became the talk of the town thanks to its updated specifications. Equipped with upgraded display, CPU, and GPU, the latest series boasts the best performance to date out of all the Galaxy Book series.
What particularly stands out is the advanced display technology used in the new series. All products in the Book3 series offer a resolution of 3K (2880x1800) with a 16:10 aspect ratio, providing a clearer and wider frame that shows more information at a glance. In addition, the outstanding OLED display allows a peak brightness of 400 nits, which can be stretched to 500 nits when the user is watching HDR content.
As the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display was adopted for the Book3 Pro/Pro 360, the refresh rate can range from 48Hz to 120Hz while the Book3 Ultra is equipped with a variable refresh rate that ranges between 1Hz and 120Hz for efficient use of power on the display. In addition, the display for the new series has been recognized for its high quality by various global certification standards, including ClearMR, VESA’s motion clarity standard program, and DisplayHDR TRUE BLACK 500, an HDR quality certification standard. The display has also been recognized as an Eye Care Display, given for its blue light reduction, and has been awarded the GREENGUARD Gold certification by the international certification organization UL, for minimizing the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions below the international threshold, proving that the display is beneficial for our lives and health.
The Galaxy Book3 series has been recognized as having a level of performance that is unmatched by any of its predecessors. Allowing users to carry out high-performance tasks such as graphic design and gaming, the series drew much attention as a product to disrupt the laptop market this year.
