Samsung Display’s results from industry-leading hazardous substance evaluation for over 300 hazardous substances show Samsung Display's efforts to lower environmental impact.

Samsung Display today announced that 14 of its OLED laptop displays for 2023 (from 13-inch to 16-inch) have received the Hazardous Substances Assessed (HSA) certification from Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), the world-renowned certification company.

Samsung Display's OLED for laptops achieved the first 'Hazardous Substances Assessed (HSA)' certification in electronic products.

Samsung Display is the first company in the electronics industry to receive certification for passing HSA’s test threshold for 300 hazardous substances, including heavy metals, residual organic pollutants and non-biodegradable substances. Samsung Display also achieved low levels below the HSA testing threshold.

HSA is a new eco-friendly product certification that assesses the level of hazardous substances through analysis of product ingredients, which evaluates 30 times more substances than the previous requirement, Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). As part of its robust process, SGS destroys the panel for analysis of the substances which may affect the potential hazards throughout the product’s lifecycle, from usage to recycling to disposal.

“As ecolabeling has become common in the consumer product market worldwide, environmental concern for hazardous substances is also increasing,” said Jackson Woo, Deputy Director of SGS Hong Kong C&P. “Samsung Display’s laptop OLEDs are the first electronic products ‘HSA’ evaluated through its hazardous substances verification to build trust in product’s sustainability,” he added.

“Developing materials and components that minimize hazardous substances has long been a priority in the OLED development process at Samsung Display along with providing the highest level of image quality,” said Samsung Display. “The HSA certification for laptop OLEDs is a great achievement in the development of our eco-friendly technology, and we expect to provide consumers with better choices.”

Previously, Samsung Display demonstrated its commitment to eco-friendly product development by becoming the first company in the panel industry to minimize the amount of volatile organic compounds emitted, obtaining the ‘GREENGUARD Gold’ certification in the year 2021 from the global safety science leader, UL Solutions.
