Samsung Display Starts Mass Production of QD-OLEDs for
UHD Resolution Monitors

  • To achieve UHD resolution on the 31.5-inch model, Samsung Display utilized ultra-precise inkjet printing technology to increase pixel density to 140 PPI
  • The combination of a peak refresh rate of 360Hz and a fast response time of 0.03ms for the 27-inch model to provide an exceptional consumer experience, especially for gamers
  • The company is targeting the premium monitor market with a diverse product lineup in 2024 and with plans to more than double QD-OLED monitor shipments year-on-year

Samsung Display today announced the start of mass production for a new 31.5-inch QD-OLED monitor with ultra-high-definition (UHD) resolution (3840x2160). This product, which offers the highest pixel density and UHD resolution among OLED monitors as well as fast response speed, is generating excitement and anticipation among consumers.

To achieve UHD resolution, Samsung Display applied ultra-precise inkjet printing technology to the quantum dot (QD) light-emitting layer. By optimizing the inkjet nozzle and spray volume, the pixel density has been increased to 140 PPI (pixels per inch), which is equivalent to the pixel density of a 65-inch 8K TV.

“Monitors have a closer viewing distance than TVs, so users’ sensitivity to image quality is particularly high,” said a company representative. “Currently, QHD resolution (2560x1440) is common for general-purpose monitors in the 30-inch range, so consumers who enjoy gaming and high-definition video content will have a strong preference for UHD products.”

In addition to the UHD resolution monitor, Samsung Display plans to target the fast-growing gaming monitor market by introducing a 27-inch QHD QD-OLED with a 360Hz refresh rate.[1] This will be the first OLED monitor with such a high refresh rate. Samsung Display has achieved this high refresh rate through its proprietary AI-driven algorithm, Quantum Enhancer. The combination of a peak refresh rate of 360Hz and a fast response time of 0.03ms will provide an exceptional consumer experience, particularly for first-person-shooter (FPS) games that require fast screen transitions and precise aiming.

Samsung Display plans to introduce new ultra-high resolution, high refresh rate products in early 2024 in collaboration with global clients.

Industry estimates predict that OLED monitor shipments, which are driving growth in the premium monitor market, will reach 600,000 units in 2023, more than four times the previous year.

Samsung Display aims to secure new customers and more than double QD-OLED monitor shipments year-on-year by targeting the premium monitor market with a diverse product lineup, including 27-, 31.5-, 34- and 49-inch monitors.
