Robot chef performs tough tests on Samsung Display panels

At Samsung Display’s MWC booth (No. 2K40 at Fira Gran Via in Hall 2), visitors are greeted by a robot dressed as a chef. The robot washes Samsung Display’s panels by immersing them in water, slashes them with a mock knife and sprinkles them with real salt. This performance highlights the types of durability tests that Samsung Display’s foldable panels underwent, featuring their unrivaled ruggedness and water resistance.

The robot also encourages applause during the performance by playfully shaking the panels, as if to say, “It’s still looking good, isn’t it?” and the robot’s facial expressions are displayed on a 9.4-inch round OLED display, which adds to the fun of the performance. The demonstration is conducted by a repurposed inspection robot that was used on a production line.

The kitchen behind the robot is equipped with a -20°C (-4°F) freezer and a 60°C (140°F) heater, where folding tests are conducted at extreme temperatures. Samsung Display recently passed the U.S. Department of Defense’s military standard test for its 7-inch-range foldable panels. The company commissioned UL Solutions, a global organization in applied safety science, to test four sections of MIL-STD 810G panels and successfully met the standards.

OLED tech that synergizes with smart devices equipped with AI technology to boost security

As the era of on-device artificial intelligence (AI) dawns, Samsung Display is demonstrating how OLEDs can synergize with smart devices equipped with AI to provide advanced security. At MWC, the company unveiled Flex Magic Pixel™, a technology that adjusts the viewing angle of the screen so that it is not visible to the person next to it and, when combined with the proper AI technology, can be used to enhance the security of smart devices.

For example, when a smart device user runs a banking application in a public place, AI technology can automatically recognize the environment and initiate additional security features.  And, OLEDs equipped with Flex Magic Pixel technology can further enhance the security of smart devices.

Samsung Display developed the technology and registered the Flex Magic Pixel trademark in November last year. Visitors to Samsung Display’s booth can experience the privacy feature by viewing the display from the front and side.

Fashion illustrator Mr. Slowboy envisions the future through OLED technologies

Samsung Display’s MWC booth also showcases ‘Mr. OLEDboy,’ a collaborative artwork made with world-renowned London-based fashion illustrator Fei Wang, also known as Mr. Slowboy. The artwork shows the future of living with OLEDs.

For the artwork, Mr. Slowboy incorporated various Samsung Display products in extreme environments, such as polar regions and deserts, or in offices set in futuristic cities. These include Rollable Flex™, which can be stretched more than five times its length, Flex Note™, which can be used as a monitor or laptop, and Flex In&Out™, which allows the panel to fold 360 degrees. Visitors are invited to take a Polaroid photo in front of the artwork or participate in an event to receive a Slowboy sticker.

‘Innovation Style Hub’ unlocks the future for accessories, gaming and XR

Samsung Display is also showcasing a variety of inspiring products incorporating OLEDs into accessories, furniture and more. In the ‘Innovative Style Hub,’ visitors can imagine their future lives enriched by OLEDs.

For example, by adding a camera to the circular OLED, users can use it as a mirror while checking the weather or send a quick message while applying makeup before heading to work. OLEDs in headphones can be used to control music apps through their headphones without having to turn on their smartphone screen. Additionally, OLEDs in car keys can transform the key into an information device rather than just a gadget that opens and closes the car door.

Samsung Display also has a dedicated area to showcase its technological prowess in the gaming market. High-performance gaming devices, such as the Valve Steam Deck OLED, Razer Blade 16 and MSI Stealth 14 featuring Samsung Display panels, are on display, showcasing their impressive picture quality with True Black (certified by VESA) and fast response times.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone, Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360 laptop and Odyssey OLED G9 monitor can be mirrored to play the same game simultaneously, creating a stunning gaming experience only possible by building an OLED ecosystem.

MicroOLED panels, the next generation of displays, are also showcased in the gaming area. OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon), which was unveiled to visitors and media at CES 2024 in January, is available to the public for the first time at MWC.

OLEDoS is an ultra-high definition display that uses organic materials deposited on silicon wafers to achieve pixel sizes down to tens of micrometers (µm) and is a key component in the emerging XR headset market. The RGB OLEDoS on display is around 1-inch in size and has a resolution similar to a 4K TV, making it the highest resolution ever achieved with the same RGB OLEDoS technology.  RGB OLEDoS is a technology that uses individual red, green and blue OLEDs on a silicon wafer to create colors without the need for a separate light source.

“In line with technological advancements such as AI, we have organized fun and special exhibition contents so that consumers can experience first-hand how OLED can revolutionize our daily lives,” said Hojung Lee, Head of Product Planning Team for Small and Medium-sized Display Division at Samsung Display. “We will continue to revolutionize the user experience of the OLED ecosystem by showcasing differentiated display solutions based on our outstanding technology.”
