[Display Glossary.zip] EP.18 : MPRT
MPRT(Motion Picture Response Time) refers to the video response speed of a display. It measures the time it takes for motion blur to appear and disappear, and is expressed in milliseconds(ms). The smaller the MPRT value of a display, the smoother and clearer the video playback will be.
Generally, display response time can be defined by the time it takes for pixel brightness to shift. This is measured by the transition time it takes from Black to White or between the Grays with different color densities. In contrast, MPRT measures the amount of time taken for a trail of a moving pattern to disappear while one frame of the video changes.
As shown in the illustration, a pattern is displayed on the screen and moved at a consistent speed, after which the motion blur(Blurred Edge Time/Width) is analyzed. Since OLED does not require liquid crystals, it has a fast reaction speed, resulting in shorter MPRT and quicker response time. Therefore, OLED can express clearer image quality.
